VANDALIA, Ill. (AP) -- A defense attorney opened a southern Illinois murder trial with an admission that his 16-year-old client gunned down two neighbors a year ago while they were sleeping.

But attorney Monroe McWard told jurors Clifford Baker was "involuntarily intoxicated" by depression medicine he had been prescribed roughly two weeks earlier.

Fayette County State's Attorney Stephen Friedel didn't offer jurors any possible motive for the killings of 53-year-old Debra Tish and 60-year-old John Mahon in their Loogootee home in August 2010.

Both were shot multiple times in the head.

Loogootee has just two dozen residents. It's about 80 miles east of St. Louis.

Baker was 15 at the time of the killings and has pleaded not guilty. He remains jailed on $2 million bond.
