A man who says he has video proof of winning the lottery has hired a lawyer to help him get his $50,000 jackpot.
This may be the first-ever case of an alleged stolen lottery ticket that is backed up with so much evidence.
John Holder tells a convincing story of how an acquaintance stole his winning ticket.
A week after Channel 4 first reported his story, that ticket is still missing.
But Holder's attorney believes he has enough proof, even without the ticket, for the state to pay that jackpot.
A photocopy of Holder's winning ticket is still on display at the Gulf station in Columbia.
His actual $50,000 Jumbo Bucks ticket disappeared after a neighbor asked to hold the ticket for a minute.
The Tennessee Lottery and Columbia police are investigating the alleged theft, but attorney Ed Gross says there is no reason not to pay Holder right now.
"If we actually get to it, I think a court would certainly have no problem finding that there is substantial compliance," he said. "We have a video of Mr. Holder when he was so excited. The first thing the clerk wisely told him to do was endorse it on the back. And that was on their store video."
Poor John Holder is disabled by a bad back and now discouraged by awful luck.
"I'm on disability. I get $674 a month, that's what, two days of bills. $50,000 would have been tremendous, tremendous," he said.
Ed Gross hopes to meet with lottery officials Thursday. The lottery people tell Channel 4 this is still under investigation and nothing has been decided.
