SEATTLE ? An attorney is accused of keying and leaving notes on cars that were not parked properly at a downtown Seattle parking garage.

Ronald Clarke Mattson, 63, is charged with malicious mischief after security officials at Columbia Center allegedly caught him keying a car during a sting operation.

According to a probable cause document, the first incident happened March 9 when Susan Wassell, who is also an attorney, parked her car with the wheels over the lines designating her parking spot. When she returned, she found a note stating "Take some parking lessons you idiot!" She later discovered her car had been keyed. Wassell says she does not know Mattson.

"One line all the way down, deep down to the metal," says Wassell. It cost her more than $1300 to repair her car. "He definitely didn't like the way I parked my vehicle."

Two days later, another attorney parked her station wagon over the lines in her parking space. When she returned, she found a note saying "Where did you learn to park Dweeb!!" There was also a scratch mark across the entire passenger side of the car.

Security officers at Columbia Center conducted a sting operation on March 15. They purposely parked a company owned car, as bait, so that it straddled the line of two parking spots.

Mattson was allegedly seen by security walking up to the car and making a motion that looked like it was being keyed. After he left, a security officer inspected the car and determined it had, in fact, been keyed, according to the probable cause documents. The incident was also allegedly captured on video by a security camera.

When confronted by police with all the evidence, Mattson allegedly admitted damaging the cars and leaving the notes. Detectives say he vowed to make amends to the victims.

Matthew Honeywell, who is Mattson's attorney, released a written statement: "Mr. Mattson cooperated fully with law enforcement's investigation in this matter. He has accepted full responsibility for his actions and has express his great remorse and shame for what he did. He has extended personal apologies to all the victims and has paid full restitution for repairs to their vehicles. Mr. Mattson sough and received counseling to address the cause of this extremely aberrant behavior and is confident it will never occur again."

Total damage to the three vehicles is estimated at $6,153.

Mattson reportedly faces up to 60 days in jail if convicted. He has yet to enter a plea.

Wassell says Mattson should be prosecuted to the full extent of the law.

She has learned one thing: "Definitely a little more cautious of where I'm parking my car."
