U.S. Attorney: Indianapolis' 'Streets Are Not Safe Enough' - 6 News WRTV

POSTED: 4:20 pm EDT June 11, 2011

U.S. Attorney Joe Hogsett said Saturday that a string of gun-related violence in Indianapolis this past week was an indication that "the streets are not safe enough" and that "more needs to be done."Hogsett released a statement after attending the funeral of Clayton Battice, 61, who was fatally shot last weekend as he returned home from a third-shift job at the Wonder Bread bakery."Over the course of the past week, at least four individuals in Indianapolis have been killed as the result of gun-related violence," Hogsett said in a news release. "These deaths are unacceptable."Hogsett also pointed out the prevalence of armed robberies involving guns within recent weeks and provided an update to an anti-gun violence initiative he and law enforcement leaders in Marion County launched in March, leading to firearms charges being filed against 21 people."The streets are not safe enough, and as these recent events have demonstrated, more needs to be done," Hogsett said. The U.S. attorney said he plans to meet with Marion County Public Safety Director Frank Straub and other law enforcement officials this week to determine how the effort might be improved.
