?He has a wealth of experience that will serve taxpayers well,? said Grand Island Mayor Jay Vavricek.
Sivick has experience as a private practice attorney, in elected leadership and volunteering. He is familiar with Grand Island, having lived most recently in St. Paul until he lost the elected county attorney position in Howard County in January, the mayor said.
?He has a broad-based background that really set him apart from the crowd,? Vavricek said. There were 13 applicants for the city attorney job opening that was created when former City Attorney Dale Shotkoski resigned in January to take the same job in Fremont.
Human Resources Director Brenda Sutherland said those 13 were pared down to two finalists.
Vavricek interviewed the two finalists ? Sivick and Assistant City Attorney Jason Eley, who has worked for the city for about one year.
Sutherland said Sivick will be presented to the full city council on June 14 to hire as city attorney. The city attorney position is a mayoral appointment, but ratification for the hire is needed from the council in order to pay the salary.
If approved by the council, Vavricek said Sivick would start the job June 15 at an annual salary of $94,000 a year.
The city attorney job is one of four key openings the city has had since Vavricek took office in December.
John Collins was named public works director to replace Steve Riehle. Tim Luchsinger was named utilities director to replace Gary Mader, who retired. Finance Director Mary Lou Brown was promoted to city administrator to replace Jeff Pederson.
The finance director position remains open. There are seven applications being reviewed, Sutherland said.
A call to Sivick in St. Paul was not immediately re-
turned.
