Elkhart -A former Indiana State Police post commander says he doubts he'll be able to afford a private attorney to defend him against charges he stole more than $90,000 in state money.
The Elkhart Truth reports that Dallard Tackett told Elkhart Superior Judge Stephen Bowers that the Indiana Attorney General has frozen all of his assets other than his pension. Tackett told Bowers Tuesday that his attorney withdrew his appearance because of money. Bowers gave Tackett until June 20 to find a new attorney.
Tackett is charged with diverting money from several county prosecutors into his personal accounts, instead of those belonging to the Indiana State Police Toll Road post. He faces six felony charges of forgery, one count of official misconduct and 10 counts of theft. Tackett resigned last August.
