Police say the cars were parked over the line, but Ronald Mattson went over the top by scratching the vehicles and leaving behind angry notes.
Prosecutors say in March, Mattson keyed three cars inside the parking garage at Columbia Center. Mattson, 63, has been charged with second-degree malicious mischief.
According to police, Mattson spotted the SUV taking up two spaces inside the garage. He wrote the driver a note that read, "Take some parking lessons, you idiot," then left it on the car windshield, investigators said. Mattson then pulled out his keys and scratched both passenger side doors, according to police.
Two days later, Mattson scratched up an entire side of a Volvo that was parked over the line inside the garage, investigators said, leaving behind a note that read, "Where did you learn how to park, dweeb."
The following week, police say security guards caught Mattson on videotape conducting a sting operation involving a decoy car. The footage shows Mattson keying up an entire car, they said.
When police first questioned Mattson about the incidents, he didn't say anything, according to prosecutors. But several days later, with his attorney by his side, prosecutors say Mattson confessed.
Mattson is very sorry for his actions, according to his attorney.
"(He has) undergone some counseling for anger management and has made restitution to the victims," said attorney Matt Honeywell.
Police say the damage to the cars totals more than $6,000.
Mattson has not been in trouble with the law in the past, according to the The Washington State Bar Association.
